The Pembrokeshire Rail Travellers' Association exists to promote and protect West Wales public transport - especially rail and linking bus services.
Our trains, something that most people take for granted, are constantly under pressure from the bean counters in London and from train companies. It is inevitable that providing public transport in this thinly populated area of the country must involve considerable subsidies from the taxpayer and nearly all buses as well as trains only operate because of external funding.
Constant lobbying is necessary to just prevent erosion of what we already have as well as feeding in new ideas for enhancements that can be developed economically. Currently the network here faces the toughest budgetary pressure from central funding that it has done for some time.
The PRTA was founded in 1989 by joint action between concerned local people and the Railway Development Society and has continued to put the case for an attractive car alternative public transport in West Wales. Concerned to offer members additional benefits the organisation has from time to time organised rail and bus-orientated walks and has been involved with the music trains that were run on the network in the late 90s.
